Completed in September 2021 amidst the challenges of the pandemic, "The Cube" (also known as The FIZZ) stands as a prominent student housing complex and a new landmark in Utrecht's revitalized Overvecht district. Developed by Van Wijnen, this crucial project addresses the high demand for student accommodation in Utrecht by providing 639 flats, a bicycle cellar, and 1000m² of public facilities. Its design features a distinctive stepped roofscape and two 50-meter height accents.

MBS played a pivotal role by producing and supplying 12,000 m² of sustainable, ready-made timber-frame facades for all 639 student dwellings and public facilities. These elements were efficiently manufactured in optimal industrial conditions, including pre-fitted stone strips and aluminum exterior joinery. This advanced prefabrication was a key factor in accelerating the construction process. Timber-frame construction ensured the building became wind, water, and airtight more quickly, allowing interior finishing to commence sooner. This rapid, high-quality build perfectly aligns with Utrecht's "Healthy Urban Living" ambition. The project's success and innovative approach were recognized when it won the "Coliving Award 2021" in the "Building & Architecture" category.
