We embrace the challenge of architecturally complex and functionally diverse urban projects. For Maankwartier Heerlen, our prefabricated timber-frame facades, including their spectacular arched elements, were instrumental in significantly reducing the building's overall weight, ensuring the structural integrity of the impressive bridge while drastically cutting construction time. This project truly highlights our capacity for precision, efficiency, and seamless delivery on a grand scale.
Project Overview
The Maankwartier in Heerlen, officially opened on August 31, 2019, is far more than just a new train station; it's a vibrant urban quarter where people live, work, travel, and relax. This integrated development features a mix of shops, cafes, a hotel, residences, and offices centered around the new station.
A defining feature of the project is "de plaat" (the plate), an imposing bridge spanning the railway lines that connects Heerlen's north and south, and links the existing and new shopping centers. Notably, a hotel was constructed directly on this impressive bridge span. For the facade finishing, client Jongen BV specifically chose timber-frame construction due to its significant advantage in reducing the building's overall weight. This choice allowed for a lighter execution of "de plaat" without compromising stability or durability. The efficient workflow ensured no disruption to train and bus traffic, and overall construction time was greatly reduced. MBS prefabricated and delivered the complex facade panels just in time for smooth on-site assembly.
