We are honored to contribute our expertise in timber-frame construction to The Lodge in Ghent, a truly innovative and inclusive residential care project. By providing the load-bearing timber-frame outer walls for this hybrid structure, we ensured superior thermal insulation and enabled the creation of a high-quality, low-energy new build that beautifully integrates specialized care with modern living.
Project Overview
Three aging corner buildings in Ghent's Brugse Poort neighborhood were demolished to pave the way for The Lodge, a groundbreaking new residential care project developed on behalf of Imbofisc. Designed by DENC!-STUDIO, The Lodge offers a unique living environment where individuals diagnosed with autism can reside alongside non-disabled people in customized homes, featuring a total of 14 care units.
The project employs a hybrid structural approach, combining load-bearing timber-frame outer walls supplied by MBS with precast concrete mezzanine levels (in plank form). This choice of timber frames was strategic, providing excellent thermal insulation without the need for excessively thick walls. Replacing the dilapidated existing buildings, The Lodge represents a low-energy new build designed to meet current sustainability standards. Its functional cores efficiently concentrate internal services within a compact area, leading to reduced piping and cabling costs.
